Is it the city’s main or your private line?
Every system has the same split. The public sewer main in the street belongs to the city or district. The private lateral from your building to the main belongs to the property owner. Burbank, Pasadena and the Los Angeles Sanitation Districts say this in their own materials. For Los Angeles, see who is responsible for the sewer line.
- If sewage is coming up in the street, a manhole is overflowing or the whole block is affected, call the number above.
- If it is inside your building or only your property, call a plumber.
- If you are not sure, a camera answers it in a few minutes.
What to tell the agency when you call
- Your address and the nearest cross street.
- What you see: sewage in the street, a manhole overflowing, or a backup in your building.
- When it started and whether neighbors are affected.
- Whether it is raining.
- A phone number where they can reach you.
Take photos of the backup and write down the time. Keep a record of who you spoke to.
In an emergency
If sewage is coming up inside the house, stop using water and call. See emergency sewer backup. If anyone is in danger, call 911. During heavy rain, LASAN asks callers to keep calls for urgent issues.
Where we fit
We are a referral service. We do not run any sewer. We connect you with Mike Anderson, a local plumber who works on the private side: camera inspection, cleaning and finding the cause. If the camera shows the problem is in the city main, he will show you the footage so you can report it. See service areas.
Rain, overflows and the city
During heavy rain, extra water enters sewers and some backups happen in public lines. LASAN advises residents to have the lateral inspected by camera and to keep roof gutters and yard drains clear so rain does not back up toward the building. See rainy season sewer backups and the LASAN rebate.
