Drain Cleaning in Los Angeles: Which Method Fits Your Clog

Short answer: a drain snake pokes a hole through a clog, hydro jetting scours the whole pipe wall with high-pressure water, and a camera shows which one you need. We connect you with a local plumber who does all three.

Common drain problems

  • Slow kitchen or bathroom drain
  • Gurgling toilet or tub
  • Drain that clogs again within weeks
  • Water backing up in more than one fixture

If more than one drain is slow, the problem is usually in the main line.

The three ways a drain gets cleaned

Most people call for “drain cleaning” without knowing which method will be used. The method matters, because the wrong one clears the clog today and brings it back next month.

MethodWhat it doesBest for
Snake (auger)A rotating cable breaks through or pulls out the blockageA single sink or tub with a simple, fresh clog
Hydro jettingHigh-pressure water scours grease, scale and roots off the pipe wallRepeat clogs, grease, main lines, older pipes that can take it
Camera inspectionA small camera on a cable shows the pipe from the insideFinding the cause, checking pipe condition, proving the result

We explain the difference in more detail in hydro jetting vs snaking.

How to tell which one you need

  • One drain slow, the rest fine: usually a local clog. A snake is often enough.
  • Several drains slow or backing up together: the clog is in the shared line. This is where jetting and a camera earn their price.
  • Clog comes back within weeks: something is coating the pipe or growing into it, such as grease or roots. Snaking only opens a channel through it.
  • Gurgling or sewage smell: often a partial blockage in the main line. Stop using water and call.

A good plumber will tell you when jetting is not the answer. If a camera shows a cracked or collapsed pipe, cleaning will not fix it.

Who does the work

Hydro Jetting Los Angeles is a referral service operated by Hydro Jet Pros LA. We are not the plumbing contractor. When you call or send a request, we pass it to Mike Anderson, a local plumber with 12+ years of experience. His team does the work, and you pay the plumber, not us.

You get a written price before any work starts. We speak English and Spanish.

What to do before the plumber arrives

  1. Stop running water in the house and do not flush.
  2. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a backed-up line. It can splash on the technician and does not work on a main line.
  3. Find your sewer cleanout, usually a capped pipe near the house or the street. Our clog signs guide shows what to look for.
  4. Note which drains are affected and how long it has been going on.

When the problem is the city’s, not yours

In the City of Los Angeles the public sewer main under the street is maintained by LA Sanitation. If sewage is coming up in the street or in several homes on the block, call the city first. See who is responsible for the sewer line.

What tools a plumber uses

Different clogs need different tools. A good plumber carries several and picks the one that fits.

What you can try yourself, and what to skip

  • Try: a plunger on a single fixture, a drain strainer to catch hair and food, and pouring very hot (not boiling) water down a kitchen sink after washing greasy dishes.
  • Be careful with: baking soda and vinegar. It can freshen a drain but rarely clears a real clog.
  • Skip: chemical drain cleaners on a main line or a fully blocked drain. They can sit in the pipe and splash on whoever opens it.
  • Skip: renting a jetter for a house line. Pressure and nozzle choice can damage pipe.

If more than one drain is slow, do not keep trying fixes. The problem is probably in the main line.

What affects the price

The method, the access, how much is in the pipe and the time of day. A simple snake visit costs less than a jetting visit, but a repeat clog can cost more over time. We do not publish a single number. You get a written price before any work starts, and published market ranges are on the cost page.

Common questions

Is hydro jetting better than snaking?

For repeat clogs, grease and main lines, usually yes, because it cleans the pipe wall instead of opening a hole. For a single simple clog a snake can be enough. A camera shows which one fits.

Can drain cleaning damage my pipes?

Done by someone who checks the pipe first, the risk is low. Very old or cracked pipe is the exception, which is why a camera pass comes first. More in can hydro jetting damage pipes.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Los Angeles?

It depends on the method, the access and the line. We publish the market ranges on the cost page, and you get a written price before work starts.
