Main sewer line

Sewer Main Line Hydro Jetting in Los Angeles: Clearing the Line to the Street

Short answer: your sewer main line is the large pipe that carries everything from your house to the public sewer. When it clogs, several drains back up at once. Hydro jetting cleans the whole pipe wall with high-pressure water, and a camera shows the pipe before and after. We connect you with a local plumber who does it.

Signs it is the main line

  • Several drains slow or backing up together
  • Toilets gurgle when the washer drains
  • Water or sewage coming up in the lowest drain
  • Sewage smell or soggy patches in the yard

Stop running water, and do not flush.

What the sewer main line is

The main line, often called the sewer lateral, runs from the house to the public sewer main under the street or alley. Every fixture in the house drains into it.

That is why a clog here behaves differently from a sink clog. One blocked sink affects one sink. A blocked main line shows up in the toilets, tubs and floor drains, and the lowest drain in the house is usually the first to back up.

In the City of Los Angeles the private lateral is the property owner’s responsibility, and the public main under the street belongs to the city. See who is responsible for the sewer line.

Why a camera comes first

On a main line, a camera is not an upsell. It tells the plumber what the pipe is made of, where it bends, whether it has cracks and where the blockage is. It also tells you whether jetting is the right fix.

A pass afterward shows the cleaned line. Ask for the video so you can compare it with the next visit or use it in a repair quote. See sewer camera inspection.

How hydro jetting clears a main line

A jetting hose with a multi-jet nozzle goes in through the cleanout. Jets point backward and pull the hose along the pipe, and the spray scours grease, scale and roots off the wall as it passes.

Pressure depends on the line. One plumbing company states up to 4,000 psi for main lines and up to 1,400 psi for home secondary lines. A California sanitary district describes working a public sewer main at 1,200 to 1,500 psi on the way up and 700 to 900 psi on the way back, at 65 gallons per minute. Your plumber picks settings for your pipe.

Higher pressure is not always better. On fragile or old pipe, the plumber should start lower or check with a camera first.

What the visit looks like

  1. The plumber asks about symptoms and the age of the house.
  2. They find the cleanout, or explain the options if there is none.
  3. A camera goes in to see the pipe and the blockage.
  4. If the pipe can take it, the line is jetted with a nozzle suited to the blockage.
  5. A second camera pass shows the result.
  6. You get a written summary and advice on keeping the line clear.

Access: the cleanout makes it faster

A cleanout is a capped pipe that gives direct access to the line. Without one, the plumber may have to work through a roof vent or pull a toilet, which is slower and harder on the fixture.

Find yours with how to find your sewer cleanout, or ask about installing one.

Keeping the line clear afterward

  • Do not flush wipes, even if the pack says flushable.
  • Collect cooking grease in a can instead of pouring it down the drain.
  • Keep large tree roots in mind and ask for a camera look if the line has clogged before.
  • If the line clogged once from roots or grease, ask the plumber how often it should be checked. See how often to hydro jet.

What affects the price

Length and depth of the line, access, how much is in the pipe, and whether a camera pass is included all change the price. We do not publish a single number, because it would be a guess. You get a written price before any work starts. See the cost page for published market ranges.

Common questions

How do I know it is the main line and not one drain?

If more than one fixture is slow or backing up, it is probably the main line. A single slow sink is usually local.

Can I jet a main line without a camera?

It can be done, but a camera shows if the pipe is damaged and whether jetting is safe. We recommend it.

How long does main line jetting take?

Usually a few hours, depending on length, access and what is in the pipe.

Will it fix roots?

It clears roots from the line. The joint they came through is not sealed, so roots can regrow. See root removal.

Is the main line my responsibility?

What if the camera shows a cracked pipe?

Then cleaning is only temporary, and the plumber explains repair options and gives a written price.
